This painting depicts a football match between 10-year-olds on a park pitch. Watching is a group of people (friends of the artist). These include John Waller, Vicar of Waldringfield, Barry Emmerson, the Iris expert, Dave Routh, who for many years has been a champion of youth football in this area, artist and printer Ron West, the artist himself and, of course, football legend Kevin Beattie (voted Ipswich Town's 'Best Ever Footballer'). Bobby Robson likened Beattie to the Manchester United legend Duncan Edwards. The point about the painting is that I don't suppose the kids playing football had any idea that they were in such illustrious company.
